No one should have to sleep in the rain.So we keep a light on.

The Ambrose Initiative gives people sleeping rough in the UK somewhere safe to stay, a hot meal they can count on, and dry clothes when the weather turns — then walks with them into work, housing and a life of their own.

Why we exist

Rough sleeping is survivable. Being written off is not.

A wet night on a British pavement is dangerous. But the deeper damage is what it does to a person’s standing in the world — the lost documents, the missed appointments, the address you cannot give an employer. We work on both: the immediate danger, and the long climb back.

01

Somewhere safe to sleep

A real bed, indoors, with a door that locks — not a doorway and a sleeping bag.

02

Food you can count on

Hot meals at predictable times, so no one has to spend the day hunting for the next one.

03

Dry clothes when it rains

Waterproofs, boots and warm layers, because being soaked through in a British winter kills.

04

A way back into work

Skills, references, ID and an address — the unglamorous things a job actually requires.

A warm, simple shelter room with made-up beds, folded wool blankets and a lit bedside lamp, rain on the window outside.
Shelter

First, get them out of the weather

Nothing else we do works until someone has slept properly. Exhaustion makes every other problem — health, addiction, paperwork, temper — harder to solve. So the first thing we offer is rest: a bed, bedding, a locked door, and a shower in the morning.

We treat the people who stay with us as guests rather than cases. That means privacy, dignity and a say in their own plan, not a queue and a clipboard.

Moving on

From surviving the street to contributing to society

Most people we meet do not want charity indefinitely. They want a wage, a tenancy and their own front door. The obstacles are rarely willingness — they are a lost passport, a gap in a CV, no bank account, no fixed address to put on a form.

We work through those obstacles one by one: replacing ID, building a CV that explains the gap honestly, practising interviews, sorting travel to the first week of work before the first payslip arrives.

Our route back into work
Our work

Four things we do, every week

Practical, unglamorous and repeatable — the kind of help that actually changes what happens next.

Two volunteers in weatherproof coats walking away down a wet street at night carrying rucksacks and a flask.

Street outreach

We go out to people where they are, with hot drinks, dry socks and a conversation — the first step to getting anyone indoors.

Hot meals

Regular, predictable meals, served at a table. Knowing when you will next eat frees up the whole rest of your day.

Warm, dry clothing

Waterproofs, boots, thermals and socks — chosen, not handed out at random, so people keep their dignity and their size.

Care kits

Socks, toiletries, a foil blanket, a poncho and a hot drink — packed by volunteers, handed out on outreach.

Support us

Warmth costs money. Indifference costs more.

We are a young charity building our services from the ground up. Every donation, every hour volunteered and every bag of decent winter coats goes directly into keeping someone out of the rain tonight.
